OPTIMA 'FULL RIDE' CONTEST-WINNING CAR GETS A CHARGE OUT OF PFAFF DESIGNS
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (May 2007) -- Two hundred provocative words. That’s all it took Iraqi war veteran Eric Jankowski to win the Optima "Full Ride" Contest and score a top-to-bottom makeover for his beloved car. So, as part of this national promotion for Optima batteries, his ’72 Chevelle received some $50,000 in upgrades, plus national ad exposure, a trip to SEMA and a spot on TV's Dream Car Garage.
But it took an electrifying styling concept from Pfaff Designs to help turn Janikowski's aging muscle car into a dream machine. Murray Pfaff shared a number of designs with the contest winner to help translate his dreams into a car that the build team could turn into a reality. The result is a masterfully upgraded, gleaming tri-tone Chevelle that blends modern design and hardware with its retro muscular power and good looks. Optima Batteries had partnered with other high-end performance automotive parts manufacturers such as GM Performance Parts, K&N, Magnaflow, JBL, Baer Brakes, MSD Ignition, Edelbrock, Autometer, Sparco, Goodyear, Bonspeed, Detroit Speed & Engineering, Currie, BASF and Sony, to sponsor the vehicle build-up. After an integrated 10-week national promotion asking contest hopefuls to submit a 200-word story and a photo on why their vehicle deserves the "Full Ride," five finalists were chosen based on originality, clarity and adherence to theme. Their submissions were posted on www.optimafullride.com, where online visitors voted for their favorite. Eric’s winning essay:"From my dusty post in Tikrit, Iraq, I would dream of you. [That's] 365 days spent mentally stripping you to the frame and building you up, better and stronger than ever before. At the Chow-Hall or in the cockpit, I’d tell my fellow motor-heads about my plans to make you the meanest 8-Gun slinger on the asphalt. When we were together, I spent many dollars and more sweat trying to honor you and what we stand for: Eight Cylinders of Red, White and Blue Big-Block Brawn. American Muscle. But 34 years of hard service have taken their toll on you. I try my best, but this humble soldier can’t do you justice on his own. So help me, Optima. Give me a roaring motor, a pulsing shift lever, a gleaming paint job, and the open road. Give me a vinyl bench seat, a good coat of Armor-All, a beautiful girl, and a hard-right turn. Help me return to glory this car that was built in the country I spent a year in Iraq defending."The build, which is being featured on the Speed Channel's Dream Car Garage TV show, had landed Jankowski and his Chevelle a spot in the SEMA show in Las Vegas, placement in national print ads for enthusiast publications, and a place on a nationwide tour planned for this summer. "It was great to play a role in this meaningful promotion," Pfaff said after retracing the build on Dream Car Garage. "And with Eric being a big guy himself – he’s 6’4” – I wanted to apply a big, bold high-energy design for his 'Full-Ride' Chevelle makeover. Congrats, Eric!"
